“Rajarata” which gives the meaning of the country of kings is the area where the earliest kingdoms Sri Lanka were established. Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa were the first kingdoms of ancient Sri Lanka and they were a major intellectual centre for early Theravāda Buddhism.
