According to the ancient Sri Lankan chronicle the Culavamsa, this area was a large forest, then after storms and landslides it became a hill and was selected by King Kashyapa (477 – 495 AD) for his new capital. He built his palace on top of this rock and decorated its sides with colourful frescoes. On a small plateau about halfway up the side of this rock he built a gateway in the form of an enormous lion. The name of this place is derived from this structure — Sinhagiri, the Lion Rock.

Major attractions are spread over five caves, which contain statues and paintings. These paintings and statues are related to Gautama Buddha and his life. There are a total of 153 Buddha statues, three statues of Sri Lankan kings and four statues of gods and goddesses. Prehistoric Sri Lankans would have lived in these cave complexes before the arrival of Buddhism in Sri
Lanka as there are burial sites with human skeletons about 2700 years old in this area, at Ibbankatuwa near the Dambulla cave complexes.

KANDY CULTURAL DANCE

The ritualistic dances of Sri Lanka (Ceylon) have attained world fame for their mystical beauty. Literary drama has not flourished, because the monks of predominantly Buddhist Sri Lanka shunned theatre. Dramatic activity found expression in exorcism ceremonies and masked dramas that employed mime, song, dance, acrobatics, and bits of prose dialogue. Heavily influenced by India, Sri Lanka’s Kandyan dance and kolam plays have South Indian origins. But over the centuries these have been transformed and now have a distinctly Sri Lankan character.

KANDY TOOTH RELIC TEMPLE

It is located in the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy, which houses the Buddha. Kandy was the last capital of the Sri Lankan kings and is a World Heritage Site mainly due to the temple. Rituals are performed three times daily: at dawn, at noon and in the evenings. He has taken us to a nice guest house in Negombo for our stay and we felt very worth for the money we paid. We can’t forget the places Elvis took us for the meals, they were amazing. After discussing with Elvis we were able to plan our 10 day stay in Sri Lanka. We spent one day in Negombo and went to Dambulla, Sigiriya, Nuwara Eliye and down south. A wonderful experience in Negambo A wonderful experience! I didn’t have much time in Sri Lanka so I stayed in Negambo. Elvis made my stay memorable! Elvis is a nice and genuine person who took me to the fish market, historical sites, and local restaurants which made me feel like a local already! Negambo is a hidden gem not far from the capital, with good beaches and chilled night life. I’m glad I chose Elvis as my guide and I’ll definitely find him again for my longer visit in Sri Lanka.

A cultural and tourist experience! By chance I got picked up by Elvis at the airport and made the best decision of my Sri Lanka experience to hire him as my driver and guide for 8 days. Elvis took care of driving and accomodations while I was touring with him and so much more! I am travelling alone and Elvis made my journey super comfortable, relaxing and memorable. We started by going to the fish market and eating delicious fish with his family at his house. I met his friends and colleagues, after discussing he shared his 8 day plan and we started the journey. I had a comfortable crossover vehicle the whole trip. Elvis took me to good restaurants and accomodations everywhere we went, got me the most amazing guides while visiting different sights, and joined me on my adventures like the elephant safari and village tour. He has certainly been doing this a long time, is a young professional. Fun fact: he's been on TV and some music videos. Everyone knew him where we went and he always had strangers and his friends wanting to hang out. I got to see the local culture as well as beautiful Sri Lanka. We changed plans a few times and he had recommendations and suggestions for many things. Always a phone call away. My trip with with Elvis left me with beautiful memories and a rich culturally diverse experience, one that I will not soon forget!
